Nourishing Progress: Reflecting on the work of the Indian National Science Academy and Plans Ahead

A range of impactful events were organised in collaboration with the Nutrition Society of India (NSI), across India in 2024. These activities focused on promoting health, nutrition education, and raising awareness around important issues such as breastfeeding, functional nutrition, and sustainable diets. In 2024, the Chapters of the Nutrition Society of India engaged in various activities to this end. These included seminars, workshops, and symposia, as well as participation in both national and international conferences. To foster collaboration and innovative thinking, several brainstorming sessions were held. Additionally, various outreach programs to connect with the community and student engagement programs to inspire the next generation of nutrition professionals were conducted. World Health Day, World Breastfeeding Week, National Nutrition Week, World Food Day, and National Science Day were enthusiastically celebrated. These initiatives reflect the commitment of the chapters to enhance public awareness and knowledge of nutrition-related issues.

A brief of the diverse activities conducted across various regions of the country is presented below:

Ludhiana Chapter: The Department of Food and Nutrition, Punjab Agricultural University, celebrated World Health Dayby highlighting the Importance of Kitchen Gardening and the benefits of Omega-3 Fatty Acids across the lifespan, from pregnancy to aging. They also organized events for World Breastfeeding Week celebrations.

Chandigarh Chapter: The Department of Dietetics, PGIMER, in collaboration with Ludhiana Chapter Organized a Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) program on Functional Nutrition and its role in clinical practice, followed by a Breastfeeding- Embracing the Bond Workshop, to strengthen breastfeeding awareness.

Indore Chapter: Celebrated World Health Day 2024 and hosted an exhibition cum recipe competition on Millets Nutritionin collaboration with Mata Jija Bai Govt. Girls PG College, promoting the significance of millets for health.

Coimbatore Chapter: Commemorated World Breastfeeding Week 2024, reinforcing the importance of breastfeeding through various awareness programs.

Chennai Chapter: Hosted a range of activities, including a workshop on research essentials, a seminar on “Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding Support for All” in collaboration with Integrated Child Development Services.

Mumbai Chapter: Organized activities focusing on Navigating Breastfeeding Fads along with two additional awareness camps dedicated to breastfeeding.

Nagpur Chapter: Collaborated with local Science colleges to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week 2024 through seminars and outreach programs.

Kochi Chapter: Held a seminar on Breastfeeding Practices: Closing the Gap to support new mothers and improve breastfeeding practices. The event was organized, in association with the Department of Home Science and Centre for Research,

Bangalore Chapter: The Division of Nutrition at St. John’s Research Institute (SJRI) conducted the comprehensive NURTURE course which covered diverse areas of nutrition research including public health, clinical nutrition, food safety, biostatistics and more. 

Jorhat Chapter: Celebrated World Breastfeeding Week 2024, fostering awareness and education on breastfeeding among the local communities.

These activities reflect NSI’s and IUNS, India’s commitment to advancing nutrition education, promoting health and wellness, and fostering community involvement across India.
