Prof. Welma Stonehouse is a Professor of Nutrition at Deakin University, Victoria, Australia. She is a distinguished nutrition scientist with over 30 years’ experience in academic, research and leadership roles across South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia. She held senior positions including Principal Research Scientist at the Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO, Australia), and Associate Professorships at Massey University (NZ) and North-West University (South Africa). Her research focuses on nutrition interventions for the prevention and management of chronic diseases through multidisciplinary translational research. This work attracted over AU$9 million in funding and led to more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific papers. She has mentored and developed the next generation of nutrition professionals through her teaching, supervision of higher degree research students, and leadership development initiatives. Prof. Stonehouse played a pivotal role in establishing leadership platforms such as the African Nutrition Leadership Program (ANLP) and the Oceanic Nutrition Leadership Platform (ONLP). She was instrumental in establishing the Federation of Oceanic Nutrition Societies (FONS), an Affiliated Body of the International Union of Nutritional Sciences (IUNS). In recognition of her contributions, she received the prestigious Muriel Bell Award from the Nutrition Society of New Zealand in 2013. She continues to serve the global nutrition community in roles such as Treasurer of IUNS, and Immediate Past President of the Nutrition Society of Australia (NSA). Her ongoing commitment to high-quality, innovative research and capacity building in nutritional science is making a significant impact both in Australia and globally.
