International Science Council – COVID-19: From Recovery to Sustainability.

As the new year gets underway, ISC is taking a look at some of the key themes for science and policy that they expect to hear more on in 2021.

On 25 and 26 January, ISC will convene key thinkers to discuss steps towards a sustainable recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, and the priority research needed to build back better.

Join ISC on 25 January to learn more about the UN Research Roadmap for the COVID-19 Recovery, and on 26 January for the soft launch of the thematic reports produced under the IIASA-ISC Consultative Science Platform “Bouncing Forward Sustainably – Pathways to a Post-COVID World”.

22nd IUNS-ICN POSTPONED to 2022

The 22nd IUNS-ICN was scheduled to be held from September 14-19, 2021 in Tokyo, Japan. In view of the worldwide spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the organisers of ICN have been carefully monitoring its impact.  Due to its developing situation and difficulties in travelling abroad, after much thought and deliberation, the Organizing Committee of 22nd IUNS-ICN has decided to postpone the congress to December 6-11, 2022. This was a difficult decision to make; however, the health and safety of the participants are of the highest priority.

Since the Congress has been postponed, the call for abstracts is temporarily suspended. New important dates and any possible changes will be circulated in due time.

Please check the ICN website (https://icn2021.org/), as all updates will be consistently posted therein.

ISIN Position Statement on Nutrition, Immunity and COVID-19

There is lack of acquired immunity in populations across the world to COVID-19, no vaccine, uncertainty about the true infection rate within countries and, the elderly are a vulnerable group (particularly those in care homes and similar institutions). Nutritional advice is, therefore considered appropriate at this time. There is much evidence from animal and human studies that antioxidant nutrition and related nutrients support the immune system to function properly. The general advice is to eat a diverse and well-balanced diet rich in coloured fruit and vegetables (to increase the intake of antioxidant and associated nutrients) to support immune function. Specific advice in relation to the elderly is to increase the intake of Vitamin E (134 mg – 800 mg/day), Zinc (30 mg – 220 mg/day), Vitamin C (200 mg – 2 g/day) and particularly for those people with low serum vitamin D status, Vitamin D (10 μg – 100 μg/day). These nutrients have been shown to enhance T cell and B cell (antibody) immunity in human studies including in the elderly. There is no specific evidence these nutritional measures can help protect against, or even lessen the effects, of, COVID-19 infection. However, it does make pragmatic sense to support nutritionally both normal health and the immune system (with doses unlikely to be harmful) before, during and after COVID-19 infection.

Proper nutrition is fundamental to health. The world is facing a double burden of malnutrition – undernutrition and obesity coexist, contributing to non-communicable diseases. Using stable isotope techniques, nutrition and health professionals can develop and evaluate nutrition actions to combat all forms of malnutrition.
